Aardvark to provide EMLICO info

General Electric (GE) to provide press information in Bermuda about Electric Mutual Liability Insurance Co. (EMLICO) and its dispute with reinsurers.

"We have been hired to handle General Electric's communication needs in what is viewed by the corporation as a trade dispute and to ensure that the misinformation machinery is tempered,'' said Aardvark's Managing Director Dusty Hind.

GE hired Aardvark in April. The company has eight employees. EMLICO, which is in liquidation, is at the centre of a storm over whether Massachusetts insurance officials should have allowed the GE insurer to move to Bermuda in 1995. Kemper Re, Hanover Re and 200 other companies are battling EMLICO's move in Massachusetts and Bermuda's courts. Bermuda's Supreme Court granted EMLICO's winding up petition last July over Kemper's objections.

In a separate action last year Kemper was given leave for a judicial review of government's decision to allow EMLICO to set up in Bermuda. However that decision was overturned in December. Kemper is now taking its action before the Court of Appeal June 9 to 13. The case is against the Minister of Finance, the Registrar of Companies and EMLICO. Kemper claims EMLICO executives knew the company was insolvent when it moved to the Island.
