C&W USA bids to service Island
Plc's US operation has applied to the Federal Communications Commission for permission to provide service to the Island.
Cable & Wireless USA is currently prevented from providing service to the Island by US regulations on competition. Under the regulations US carriers are prohibited from providing international services to places where a related company has a monopoly.
Cable & Wireless Bermuda previously had a monopoly here until TeleBermuda International began providing international service on the Island.
Cable & Wireless Bermuda general manager Eddie Saints said the application doesn't affect operations here he said. The Bermuda operation would not offer an preferential treatment to Cable & Wireless USA over other US carriers.
Until its application is approved Cable & Wireless USA is forced to pass on business going to Bermuda to other US carriers.
