Gallery, bookstore set to open

Sargasso Sister Gallery and Bookstore will open later this week, said manager Mrs. Frances Dismont.

The business will feature one of a kind signed original art and specialty books.

"We are serving the discriminating customer who wishes to buy something other than the run of the mill `Bermudiana' artwork featuring hibiscus and pink houses or T-shirts,'' said Mrs. Dismont.

Sargasso Sister will strive to highlight the work of local artists who work in non-traditional formats. Currently the gallery has works by Mr. Will Collieson, Ms Jennifer Stobo and platinum photographer Mark Emmerson, she said.

More artists are scheduled to be added to the list, Ms Dismont said.

Sargasso Sister specialises in books covering women's issues, the men's movement, health, spirituality, psychology, African American and native American traditions. The store maintains a representative sample of books on AIDS, cancer, constructive living, creation spirituality, comparative religions, fiction, grieving, healing, massage and mysticism.

The store, located at 29 York Street next to Frith's Liquors, also orders fine crafted Asian furniture.

The store is planning a grand opening Friday, June 9 from 7-9 p.m. while the first full day of business will be Saturday, June 10.

Husband and wife Mr. Delaey Robinson and Ms Andrea Dismont co-own the business.
