Sea Containers buys `21' Club
Ltd. has reached an agreement to buy the New York City landmark restaurant `21' Club.
Sea Containers president and chairman of Orient-Express Hotels Mr. James Sherwood and `21' Club owner Mr. Marshal Cogan made the announcement yesterday, said Bloomberg business news service.
The deal includes acquisition of three former brownstone houses, land as well as 27 original Remington paintings and a 10,000 bottle wine cellar.
Ownership transfer is expected in November. Other terms were not disclosed.
Originally founded in 1920 as a speakeasy, the club has catered to diners from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Humphrey Bogart as well as every president since Prohibition.
Sea Containers-owned Orient-Express manages hotels including the Hotel Cipriani in Venice and the Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro as well as the Orient Express train in Europe and the Eastern & Oriental Express which operates in Southeast Asia.
