who has been with Marks and Spencer for the last three years.

As a dedicated employee she sees to it that the store sparkles and reflects the best possible image for Marks & Spencer.

"My role here is setting the visual standards for the store and our merchandise. Right now we have a light and airy look.

"Marks & Spencer have prioritised their visual merchandising for the UK business this year and they have invested considerable money and resources in this area.

"Years ago they called us window dressers or display staff. We are trying to move with the times,'' Mrs. Bartley said.

Bermuda's Marks & Spencer displays are orchestrated from London and adapted for Bermuda.

According to Mrs. Bartley they have a great working relationship with the company people in the UK who devise action plans for their branch stores such as the one here.

Mrs. Bartley says that one of the biggest challenges on the job is trying to keep up while waiting for deliveries.

Sometimes it is difficult to keep to specific time schedules due to Bermuda's isolation in the middle of the Atlantic.

When asked what kind of display attracts customers Mrs. Bartley said: "There are four components. The first is a clear message, the second is a lifestyle orientation - in Bermuda that means able to get in and out of the store quickly, the third is good colour coordination and the fourth is to be clean, polished and uncluttered.'' "Our goals for this summer are taking new approaches for new looks with softer pastels, brighter brights and different choices. Our selections are more European this summer.'' Mrs. Bartley loves her job and has spent most of her working life in retail.
