Bank shares retreated yesterday, helping push the Bermuda Stock Exchange Index below the 1100 mark in light trading.

The Index closed down 11.77 points at 1096.78 on volume of 4,204 shares worth $52,218.

Commercial Bank had the heaviest volume on the day, falling 25 cents to $11.25 on volume of 1,700. The Banks of Bermuda and Butterfield both lost a quarter as well, with the former closing at $19.25 on volume of 574 and the latter ending the day at $13.25 on volume of 1,377.

In the day's only other trade, Bermuda Home held at $6.75 on volume of 553.
