Bermuda yesterday after one of its engines failed.

But the plane instead carried on to New York, where it landed safely.

Local American Airlines manager Mrs. Carole DeCouto said she believed the flight was bound for New York from Santo Domingo.

The Bermuda Fire Service was called to the Airport at about 6.30 p.m. after it was notified the flight would divert to Bermuda for an emergency landing.

Two vehicles and the duty officer were dispatched to the Airport, but the call was cancelled before they reached St. David's.

The pilot decided New York was nearly as close as Bermuda.
