Somers Isles Insurance Company was the first branch of what is now the Argus Group of Companies and its incorporation on August 14, 1950 marked the first time Bermudians could secure health insurance.

The Government Health Insurance Plan came over 20 years later and was instituted in 1971.

Argus Insurance grew from its beginnings as the Somers Isles Insurance Company forming Bermuda Life to cater to life insurance and Argus Insurance to handle property and casualty businesses.

Today the well established Bermuda company boasts a staff of 105.

At the headquarters on Wesley Street yesterday, employees sported blue company T-shirts and caps, which were handed out a breakfast prepared by top executives.

"Some VP's were in here as early as 5.30 making breakfast and getting prepared,'' said vice president Larry Osborne.

"We served up bacon and eggs, cereal and yogurt to employees between 8 and 8.30,'' he added. "They seem to like it and many of the executives enjoy serving them.'' Cake and soft drinks were available for staff and clients who visited the offices but the company will host more celebrations before the end of the year.

A family fun day at Clearwater Beach, a golf tournament at Riddell's Bay and a black tie dinner at La Coquille are all slated to take place in upcoming months.

Company directors, executives and longstanding staff were treated to a cruise on board a tall ship in June.
