Departing ship crashes into dock
crashed into Number 7 dock while trying to leave the Island yesterday.
The 309-foot MV Talisman , which arrived several days ago from New Brunswick with a load of newsprint, tried to sail for the West Indies at about 3 p.m.
when she experienced an apparent mechanical failure and her stern collided with the wall.
Corporation of Hamilton Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt said both the ship and the dock were damaged.
But neither is out of service, and the ship -- which was leaking from a ballast tank -- was expected to sail this morning.
After the collision, in which nobody was injured, a Marine and Ports vessel helped the Talisman move back alongside the dock.
The damaged stretch of dock, which Mr. Sherratt estimated would cost a few thousand dollars to fix, had been replaced only a few years ago after it was damaged when another ship collided with it, he said.
Marine and Ports are investigating.
