Many blame parents for failing to exercise control over their children, but Mrs. Martha Dismont, director of the Learning Centre, said parenting is a skill that must be practised every day within a supportive environment.

Next week her organisation is putting on a series of workshops on anger management and the theory and practice of non-violence.

Mr. Arun Gandhi, grandson of Indian civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi, will deliver a keynote address at the Sonesta Beach hotel on Thursday July 13. The workshops will follow on Friday July 14th and Saturday July 15th at the same venue.

Mrs. Dismont said it is important for parents to attend.

"Mr. Gandhi is coming specifically to address some of the issues in the community that are of concern to parents, the Government and the community,'' she said.

"He is coming to address issues of violence and parenting especially parenting.'' While discussion will dominate the workshops, Mrs. Dismont said that viable solutions to problems will also emerge.

Mrs. Dismont said that the parenting conference was aimed at reinforcing much of what was discussed at the recent "Blow the Whistle on Violence'' conference.

"We recognise the problem now and I hope he (Mr. Gandhi) will be somebody who can help us to immediately work on solutions.'' Interested persons who wish further information should contact the Learning Centre at 295-1116.
