Great ad, but no golf course!
telephone book is leading visitors and locals on wild goose chases, a Southampton woman said yesterday.
The phone book features a two-thirds-page ad for The Bermuda Golf Academy driving range and 36-hole adventure mini golf on Middle Road in Southampton.
Billed as "Bermuda's Number One Golf Family Entertainment Centre'', the ad says it is "open seven days a week rain, blow or shine''.
An artist's sketch of the facility is included, and hours of operation are listed as 8 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.
But the facility has yet to open.
"It hasn't even been built yet,'' complained Ms Lony Wittich, who arranged to meet friends at the golf haven after spotting the ad in the phone book.
"It upset me very much.
"It's not proper to run such a large ad and not say, `Work in Progress,' or `Opening soon,' or whatever,'' she said. "It's just not a good thing for Bermuda.'' Later the same day, Ms Wittich said she met visitors at the Southampton Princess who tried to take a taxi to the facility and were unable to find it.
"I'm sure once it's developed it's a great thing, but in my opinion it should not be in the yellow pages at this point.'' Yesterday, the telephone number that appeared in the ad just rang and rang.
Businessman Mr. Richard Farge, who is developing the Bermuda Golf Academy, could not be reached for comment.
In May, Mr. Farge told The Royal Gazette he booked the ad in December, when he thought the facility would open sooner. "Now I'm getting as many as 12 calls a day which shows what kind of interest there is in a facility like this,'' he added.
At the time, Mr. Farge said he needed to raise another $200,000 to develop his dream, which he felt could be opened by the end of June.
On an expansive 12-acre plot of land off Middle Road in Southampton, pylons for the main structure have been put in place. And design of a complex that would include more than 60 bays, target greens, putting greens, pro shop, snack bar, floodlights and eventually mini-golf course is complete and approved by authorities.
