Rioting by people upset with a 30 percent hike in the price of gas reportedly caused the death of one woman. According to The Jamaica Gleaner a pregnant woman was shot by police officers in the Grants Pen area, while a Jamaica Defence Force soldier was shot and injured in Seaview Gardens.

" On the strict advice of the British High Commission in Jamaica'' British Airways announced the cancellation of its service to the island.

"As the safety of our passengers is of paramount importance to us'' the airline said "British Airways has cancelled its flights to Jamaica as the situation is still volatile''.

American Airlines has also cancelled its flights and will reassess the situation on Saturday. Other US airlines have also cancelled, in part because roads to the airport arer said to be blocked.
