Local gets a top postal service job
the entire United States Postal Service.
In his new role as vice president, quality, Mr. Charters reports directly to Postmaster General and CEO Mr. Marvin Runyon.
Mr. Charters has risen rapidly up the promotional ladder since entering the US Postal Service in 1968 as a management intern. In his early career, he held positions in the human resource department.
In 1973 he became responsible for the national operation of grievance procedures.
Between 1975 and 1979, he was regional director of employee and labour relations for the central region and then took over the same position in the southern region until 1985.
In 1988, he served as acting Regional Postmaster General for the 13-state southern region.
Mr. Charters has been part of the Postal Service's management team in five contract negotiations with the postal unions.
He has received the Postal Career Executive Service Special Achievement Award twice, in 1982 and 1984.
Mr. Charters is married to Christine, who is from Northern Ireland. The couple has three children.
