Movie stars make busy week even more hectic

Film star Mr. Charlton Heston and singer-dancer Mr. Gregory Hines flew to Bermuda on Friday to board the luxurious cruise ship Silver Cloud .

And actor Mr. Jeff Bridges is off Bermuda filming aboard the 132-foot square rigger Eye of the Wind .

Silver Cloud , an Italian-flagged Silversea Cruises vessel launched in 1994, was making her first visit to Bermuda on her way between Fort Lauderdale and the Azores.

The ultra-luxury ship, which was berthed in Hamilton for only one day, attracted Mr. Heston and Mr. Hines, who arrived on separate flights to board her.

Mr. Heston, whose film credits include "Ben Hur'', "Planet of the Apes'', and "Julius Caesar'', starred in a production of "Macbeth'' directed by Mr.

Burgess Meredith at Bermuda's Fort St. Catherine in the 1950s.

Mr. Hines boarded Silver Cloud at sea, having arrived aboard a 3.55 p.m.

flight from the States when the cruise ship was scheduled to leave Hamilton at 4 p.m. The star of films "White Nights'', "The Cotton Club'', and numerous Broadway productions was raced by Meyer Agencies Ltd. to Ordnance Island, where he boarded a pilot boat and met the ship as she left the Island.

Mr. Bridges is in Bermuda filming "White Squall'', directed by Mr. Ridley Scott. Eye of the Wind , a British-registered square rigger, arrived from St.

Maarten to work on the movie.

Mr. Scott, who directed "Alien'', "Blade Runner'', "Legend'', and "Thelma and Louise'', chose Bermuda for the shoot because he was looking for rough waters! And the film crew is hoping for bad weather during the several weeks they are here (they're off to a good start!) Eye of the Wind is accompanied by the Tortola-registered Sea Hustler , a 112-foot utility vessel that came to Bermuda from St. Thomas. She was anchored in St. George's on Tuesday.

In other shipping news, the Greek-registered bulk carrier Maple was expected in Bermuda on Tuesday night to discharge a sick crew member, Meyer Agencies reported. She was bound for Portugal from Louisiana.

USS Taylor , an Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate, came into Dockyard for one day on Monday for fuel.

The refrigerator ship Pioneer Express , carrying frozen orange juice to Sweden, came to Dockyard on Tuesday for engine repairs, Meyer said.

And the bulk carrier Trone , which flies the Norwegian international flag, was expected at Penno's Wharf tomorrow to discharge about 12,000 tons of gravel from Nova Scotia, Meyer said. She will likely sail on Saturday.

The small ship Elba Express was due in Dockyard yesterday for bunkers, agents John S. Darrell & Co. Ltd. said.

Bermuda's regular cruise ship callers continued to post healthy occupancy numbers.

Horizon arrived in Hamilton from New York on Monday with 1,361 passengers, Meyer said. She shifted to St. George's on Wednesday and sails today.

Dreamward , carrying 1,249 passengers, arrived in St. George's on Monday and shifted to Hamilton on Tuesday and sails today, Meyer said. The third cruise ship handled by Meyer, Meridian , was expected to arrive at Dockyard from Philadelphia yesterday. A passenger count was not available. She sails tomorrow. Royal Majesty arrived in St. George's from Boston on Tuesday, John S. Darrell said. Her passenger count was not available. She sails tomorrow.

John S. Darrell was also expecting the occasional caller Royal Viking Sun , scheduled to spend this weekend in Hamilton.

The container ship Oleander arrived in Hamilton on Sunday from Port Elizabeth, New Jersey and discharged 159 containers, including 37 refrigerated ones, Container Ship Management reported. She also carried two large A-frames which were part of a Belco generator sent to Japan for repairs, building material, a forklift truck, and one car. She sailed on Tuesday.
