They are the first occupants of the new units leased by developers Washington Properties.

All nine units are taken and the other tenants are expect to be open for business by November 1.

Ms Gillian Motyer, owner of Cotton Ginny, a Canadian natural-fibre clothes designer, said shoppers streamed into the store yesterday, curious to see it had opened.

"People have been crowding in,'' said Ms Motyer. "There have been quite a few sales.'' Cotton Ginny moved from Bermuda House Lane last week.

Other current Washington Mall tenants, who are moving to the new annex include: Fourways Pastry Shop, Vida Boutique, The Busy Body and Tie Deck. The Body Shop will take the Fourways site on Reid Street and Washington Mall Magazines will take over Tie Deck's space. Exclusively Avon replaces The Busy Body. New stores include a lingerie store called Secrets, and a candy store called Treats.

Men's clothing store, The Edge, currently located on Reid Street, will open on November 1. Communications company Busycomm will also open a retail operation in Washington Mall West on November 1 and plans an official opening for November 15.
