Stock Exchange Index falls below 1,000 mark

yesterday, sagging 3.43 points and closing at 996.58, on volume of 14,987 shares valued at $208,783.88.

Bank stocks were mixed, with Bank of Bermuda rising 12.5 cents to $18.25 on trading of 4,415 shares, and Bank of Butterfield slipping 25 cents to $10.50 on a volume of 7,810.

In consumer stocks, Bermuda Bakery slipped 62.5 cents down to $19.375, after 240 shares changed hands. In the insurance sector, Argus firmed up 12.5 cents to $10.625 with the movement of 1,321 units.

Two other issues were down, with 800 Staples Holdings Ltd. 10% preference.

shares trading down 25 cents to $8.75 and 601 Telco shares trading down 50 cents to $37.
