The Bermuda Stock Exchange index had a bumper day and rose by 71 points to close at 1,523 yesterday.

The nearly 5 percent rise was due to five stocks going up in price. BELCO Holdings rose $3.00 to close at $20.50, while KeyTech, the holding company for Bermuda Telephone Company rose $1.50 to close at $31.00.

Shares in all three banks rose. Bank of Bermuda went up $1 to $29.00, Bank of Butterfield rose $1.25 to $18.75 and Bermuda Commercial Bank rose 5 cents to finish at $5.45.

A volume of 3,580 shares worth $53,599 traded hands.
