TBI launches new long-distance plan on eve of Digicel court hearing

TBI president Greg Swan

TeleBermuda International Ltd (TBI) yesterday announced a new long-distance calling plan in an apparent response to the controversial plan introduced by Digicel less than two weeks ago.TBI said its Infinity Plus plan provides unlimited calling to the US, Canada, UK and Ireland for a fixed monthly fee of $34.95 on two lines, either a fixed or cell phone, for one flat rate, and said it had also introduced new low rates to the Caribbean. The move came as TBI and Digicel prepare to meet again today in the Supreme Court in the continuation of a case in which TBI has challenged Digicel’s right to offer the long-distance service because of the restrictions of its wireless services licence. Digicel stated that its recent acquisition Transact, an internet service provider, was offering the long-distance service, rather than Digicel itself.Judge Ian Kawaley encouraged the Department of Telecommunications to make its views known to the court and that is due to happen today.“We are always listening to our customers and will always do our best to meet their needs,” said TBI president Gregory Swan. “TBI continues to offer the best value for money to our valued customers.”
