Millennial-led ‘mindshare’ heads for Bermuda

Some of the world’s smartest and most talented millennial entrepreneurs are coming to Bermuda for the first “Meeting of the Minds” event to be held outside the US.

Organisers hope the overseas attendees will be joined by an equal number of Bermudian-based entrepreneurs, chief executive officers and corporate sector leaders.

Promoted as one of the top millennial-led “mindshares” in the world it is headed by Jared Kleinert, USA Today’s, “Most Connected Millennial”, who gave a sell-out talk on the island to an audience of 150 in January.

The three-day event brings together business leaders, entrepreneurs and networking experts, and while it is millennial-led, it is not restricted to millennials. However, it is limited to 50 attendees and is open only to those who apply and are invited.

A broader section of the community will be able to get involved at two public presentations that will take place a few days afterwards. Registered public school students will be allowed to attend the second of the presentations for free.

Mr Kleinert is a TED speaker and author and founder of 3 Billion Under 30. He is co-hosting the event with Bermuda’s Anthony Mocklow, founder and chief innovation officer of Par 3 Consulting.

Mr Mocklow said: “Meeting of the Minds is a very exciting network of entrepreneurs and business professionals and I am thrilled that they have chosen Bermuda for the first international experience.

“Meeting of the Minds Bermuda is a tremendous opportunity for Bermudian-based entrepreneurs to develop deep and meaningful relationships with like-minded individuals from around the world and creating some amazing connections to help solve genuine business issues.”

Mr Mocklow, founder of the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship, said the event was an opportunity for CEOs and business owners to spend three days “masterminding with diverse subject matter experts who can help you scale your business, refine your marketing and sales strategies, and welcome you into a fast-growing international network of top entrepreneurial minds”.

Meeting of the Minds events have been held in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, bringing together bestselling authors, CEOs of nine-figure businesses, co-founders of start-ups with $100 million in funding, Forbes 30 Under 30 honourees, Hall of Fame athletes and executive coaches of Fortune 500 executives.

Among sponsors for the Bermuda event are the Bermuda Business Development Agency, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation and the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

Mr Kleinert, who has visited the island a number of times, said: “Meeting of the Minds is humbled by the warm reception we’ve received in Bermuda, from our various partners and sponsors who took incredible interest in bringing our summit to the island from day one, and from members of the Government, including Premier David Burt and [education] minister Diallo Rabain.”

The Meeting of the Minds event takes place from September 5 to September 7. It will be followed by two public presentations on September 10. The first presentation is titled “How to build a world-class network in record time” and will teach professional networking and relationship-building skills to the wider business community.

At the second seminar Mr Kleinert will present his latest book 3 Billion Under 30: How Millennials Continue Redefining Success, Breaking Barriers, and Changing The World to public school students, who can attend for free and receive a copy of the book. It is hoped that hundreds of the island’s students will attend. Space is limited for both seminars on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mr Mocklow said: “The opportunity to expose our students to this group is equally exciting, especially as Bermuda starts to open its economy to innovative industry ideas in both fintech and life sciences. Developing our future business leaders is the number one challenge for Bermudian based businesses, and reaching larger international markets is critical for growth.”

Welcoming the event to the island, Sean Moran, interim CEO of the BDA, said: “We’re excited Meeting of the Minds has selected Bermuda as the next stop for this novel event and we’re glad to support it.

“Jared’s peers, audience, and guest list are exactly the demographic the BDA is seeking to attract to the island — influential CEOs and business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators, next-generation HNWIs [high net worth individuals], and millennials seeking investments of any kind. We look forward to welcoming these international ‘Minds’ to the island for what we hope are fruitful conversations and lots of successful networking.”

Erica Smith, executive director of the BEDC, said the organisation was excited and honoured to be partnering with Meeting of the Minds Bermuda.

She said the BEDC provides free, confidential business advice for entrepreneurs aimed at helping to grow the island’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and “anytime the BEDC has the chance to connect our local small and medium businesses to international contacts and opportunities, we will jump at it”.

Ms Smith added: “Meeting of the Minds Bermuda provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our local entrepreneurs to meet and learn from some of the world’s most talented millennial entrepreneurs right here at home and we encourage them to take full advantage of this special occasion.”

Other sponsors of the event are Travel Edge, Flanagan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant and Premier Tickets.
