A chess boxing world champion will share free tips on boxing and yoga when he comes to Bermuda next week to scope out ahead of an entrepreneurial summit in November.

It will be Matt Thomas’s first visit to the island, and he is looking forward to sharing some of his passion for yoga and boxing.

He is a co-founder of the first Bermuda Entrepreneurship Summit, an all-day event to be held on November 21.

As part of pre-event preparations he will visit Bermuda with Jared Kleinert, fellow co-founder of the summit, to network and check out the conference venue.

As part of next week’s visit he will lead a free yoga flow event and a separate beginner’s boxing session, which will also be free.

“We want to connect with as many people on the island as possible,” he said.

“We want to build a community on the island that is interested in entrepreneurship and personal development.”

Mr Thomas is a weight division chess boxing world champion and captain of Team USA ChessBoxing.

At the summit in November he will explain the technique he uses to instantly and effectively transition between the extreme demands of playing chess and competing in a round of boxing, chess boxing involves continuous switching between the two disciplines.

He believes the breath work and refocusing techniques can be applied in beneficial ways in other life situations.

In the morning on September 19, Mr Thomas will lead a yoga flow event at the Shamana Circle studio, on Front Street. The free event is being sponsored by Naked Zero, whose chief executive officer Suzanne Khan will be among the guest speakers at the summit in November.

The following morning Mr Thomas will lead a “boxing on the beach for beginners” session at the nearest waterfront location to the Hamilton Princess.

“That is super beginner-friendly. The description is ‘learn how to throw a punch” and do a boxing-style, high intensity training workout’. It’s something I lead in Atlanta, and it’s super fun, super upbeat and can scale to any fitness or experience level,” he said.

While both events are free, there is limited space at the yoga session, so it is recommended that those intending to go along send a RSVP message to the summit e-mail address to secure a spot.

Mr Thomas and Mr Kleinert also plan to hold a few meet-and-greet happy hour and meal gatherings to spread the word about the summit, and to network. Those who attend the fitness events will be offered a unique discount code for the summit.

“The top priority is to meet people on the island. We are here for three days, so we want to maximise that time,” Mr Thomas said.

“If a few people decide they want to come along to the summit as a result, that’s a great byproduct.”

He added: “This is really my introduction to the island, so I want to share what I am passionate about, which is boxing and yoga, and go to some of the social events and see what the island is like and the people and let them know what we are doing in November.

“It’s an opportunity to learn a new skill, and to meet new people that are like-minded and motivated.”

The entrepreneurship summit will also feature Bermuda-based Michael Branco, of Fireminds; Kidist “Pinky” Emery, of Salon Pink; and Erica Smith, executive director of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation.

International speakers will include Elyse Archer, a personal brand strategist and video confidence creator; Tim Francis, founder of ProfitFactory.com; and Mr Kleinert, an award-winning author and TED speaker, who has been named “most connected millennial” by USA Today.
