Jazz Fest hits its finale tonight

Pieces of a Dream

Tonight marks the finale of this year's Bermuda Jazz Festival, and the Dockyard line-up includes visiting artists Kenny G; the trio Pieces of a Dream; Gerald Levert and Stephanie Mills. Opening for Bermuda is Fires of Africa.

Kenny G is a phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose total album sales top 30 million. The sounds of his soprano sax have been a staple on adult contemporary and "smooth jazz" radio stations since the mid-'80s, making him a household name.

Born Kenny Gorelick, he started playing sax professionally at age 17 with Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976.

Following his graduation from the University of Washington, he worked with the jazz group, Jeff Lorber's Fusion, with whom he made two albums.

He was soon signed to the Arista label. His fourth album, 'Duotones', which included the immensely popular 'Songbird', made him into a star.

Album sales have elevated his soprano sax to new heights, with a smooth and fluid method that has resulted in sold-out tours, number one albums and singles , and Grammy, Billboard and American Music awards.

Pieces of a Dream, comprised of bassist Cedric Napoleon, drummer Curtis Harmon, and keyboardist James Lloyd, was founded in 1975 in Philadelphia when its members were all teenagers.

Its name is taken from the late Stanley Turrentine's cover tune. The group was discovered by Grover Washington, Jr., who produced its first three albums, beginning in 1981.

With nearly a dozen albums to their credit, the group has consistently remained true to themselves and in touch with the times.

Gerald Levert is a contemporary soul singer whose smooth, yet robust vocals bring energy and emotion to even his most serene recordings. He grew up in the footsteps of his father Eddie Levert of the O'Jays.

As a child, his father's status in the music industry nurtured and helped prepare Gerald for his prosperous music career as a writer, arranger, producer and performer.

Along with friend Marc Gordon and brother Sean, Gerald Levert formed the R&B trio 'Levert', and recorded the group's first single, 'I'm Still'.

That single marked the beginning of a successful partnership, resulting in five number one singles, seven Top Ten singles, and four Top 20 singles on the Billboard R&B charts. One hit single, 'Casanova', peaked at number four on the Billboard pop charts.

Gerald Levert released his first solo debut album in 1991. The following year he released a duet with his father, and a number one single, 'Baby Hold on to Me'.

In addition to his impressive string of hits, the Cleveland native has also served as a songwriter, vocalist and producer to many popular artists.

Stephanie Mills first came to fame as "the little girl with the big voice" as the star of the hit Broadway musical, 'The Wiz'.

She has also had numerous R&B hits, including 'I have Learned to Respect the Power of Love', 'I Feel Good All Over', ('You're Puttin') A Rush On Me', 'Something in the Way You Make Me Feel', and the certified million-selling single, 'Never Knoew Love Like This Before'.

The Brooklyn native honed her rich vocal skills singing gospel as a child. She won the Amateur Hour at New York's Apollo Theatre for six straight weeks when she was nine years' old, which eventually led to her being chosen as the opening act for the Isley Brothers.

Her debut album, 'Movin' in the Right Direction' was released in 1974. Since then, her string of number one hits, ground breaking collaborations, and show-stopping performances have positioned Miss Mills as a perennial favourite in R&B music.

Fires of Africa began as a dance troupe and drumming company in 1991 but today the five-member Bermudian ensemble incorporates an array of diverse music styles to create its own unique and stimulating sound.

Inspired by Nigerian author Naiwu Osahon, the group took its name from the writer's book, 'Fires of Africa'.

Blending jazz, reggae, R&B, blues, rock and rap, the group's spiritual and uplifting sound leaves fans feeling liberated.

And this strong, yet sooting vibe, flows seamlessly through each track on their latest CD, 'Praise Jah', which is based on the spiritual inspiration of the group's members: Deverux (Truneh) Flood, Shadeed, Maqdas and Maxine.
