The incident happened at Hamilton's Oasis late on Saturday night after the doors jammed on the ground floor.

Management told the people stuck inside a serviceman would be called and they would be freed within an hour.

But after 20 minutes, some of the people stuck in the elevator complained it was becoming increasingly stuffy and claustrophobic.

And three men in their 20s kicked out a 6 feet by 3 feet panel, allowing people to climb out into the Emporium Building.

A Police spokeswoman said yesterday: "There appears to be some discrepancy between the patrons and management as to whether or not the kick out of the glass was a case of emergency. Police investigations are continuing.''
