Wendell (Shine) Hayward, Lady Tyson, and 91 year-old pianist Mrs. Ester Allen Bentley will be some of the entertainers performing in The Musical Extravaganza to raise money for Devonshire Parish Home.
The Musical Extravaganza is a presentation of the Somers Lioness Club and is under the distinguished patronage of Canon and Mrs. Thomas Nisbett. The show will take place next Thursday at Christ Church on Middle Road, Devonshire starting at eight o-clock. Admission is $20 for patrons and $10 for general admission.
In addition to "Shine'' Hayward and Lady Tyson, also known as Nicole Francis, spectators will also enjoy the sounds of Mrs. Connie Smith and the highly trained Mr. Joe Mc Gann.
Several of the Island's churches will have performers at the Musical Extravaganza. The Marsden Methodist Male Voice Choir will perform under the direction of Mr. Rodney Tucker. Mr. Marc Telemaque, a young lawyer who sings with St. Paul AME choir, Ms Madree Cross from Allen Temple choir, and Diamonds in the Rough Quintette, a Seventh Day Adventists group, will complete the line up.
Proceeds from the show will aid the Devonshire Parish Home. The facility cares for semi and independent elderly Bermudians. The home has about 11 people in residence at the moment and is administered by the Parish council under the chairmanship of Giorgio Zanol.
Devonshire Parish Home was given to the parish vestry,in 1894 by the family of Sir John Cox, to be used to help needy people. In 1994 a new kitchen and lift were added to the home, however it left the home with a mortgage.
Marlene Trott, one of the show's committee members, hopes that enough money will be raised to help with the mortgage payments. She also added that the home is mainly staffed by volunteers and relies heavily on donations, "any donations from the public would be welcomed.'' Tickets can be attained by contacting Chairperson Lioness Helene Dill, Lioness Marlene Trott, or Lioness Edris Dill.
LETTING IT SHINE -- Musician Mr. Wendell (Shine) Hayward will be among the featured entertainers at next week's musical extravaganza in aid of the Devonshire Rest Home. The event is being staged by the Somers Lioness Club.
