Routine sea water testing found high levels of bacteria in the water off Market Wharf caused by sewage.
As a result environmental health officers will put up warning signs telling swimmers to stay clear of the area until the water is cleaned up.
Yesterday Estlyn Harvey, the chief environmental health officer, said: "As a precautionary measure the Department of Health will erect a sign at Market Wharf to warn the public against swimming in the area.''
