footsteps of one of the world's most famous female artists next summer.

Julia Horseman, who gave a series of highly successful lectures on the celebrated 18th century artist Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun at the Bermuda College last year, will be one of the co-directors on a special Grand Tour to Rome and Florence.

Sponsored by The Campanian Society, the trip will retrace the steps made by Mme. Lebrun -- and many other artists, writers, connoisseurs and young aristocrats -- on her visit to the two fabled Italian cities.

"Mme. Lebrun, who was the most celebrated portraitist of her time, was actually forced to make her trip to Italy, as she was forced into exile to avoid the French Revolution,'' explains Mrs. Horseman. "She became an indefatigable tourist, however, seeking out the great works of Roman, Renaissance and Baroque art and ancient monuments throughout the country. Our Grand Tour of Florence and Rome will also explore those monument of ancient and Early Christian Rome and the classically-inspired paintings, sculpture and architecture of the Italian Renaissance, and the Baroque which followed.'' The Florentine experience will encompass works by Giotto, Masaccio, Donatello, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Raphael and Michelangelo.

In Rome, there will be visits to the Forum, Palatine, Colosseum, Pantheon and the Baths of Caracalla, numerous early Christian churches, St. Peter's and the Vatican and looking at the art of Raphel, Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Bernini.

Mrs. Horseman, who has degrees from Northwestern and Maryland Universities and her Masters in Art History from East Tennessee State University, will be escorting this special tour from June 28 to July 12, 1997. The cost is either $3,395 (Tour Option 1) which includes land and transatlantic flights New York/Rome or $2,795 (Option 2) which includes the land portion of the trip only.
