At the Movies: Also Showing

"Iron Man" — Robert Downey Jr. is riveting in the title role as playboy industrialist Tony Stark who fashions ssuit of armour in order to escape from his captors in Afghanistan and becomes a weapon himself. The movie is also a blast — the perfect start to the summer with its shiny mix of visual effects, elaborate set pieces and humour.

Jeff Bridges is deliciously villainous as Tony's top executive, Obadiah Stane, with Gwyneth Paltrow bringing understated smarts and class to the role of Pepper Potts, Tony's right-hand woman. – Liberty Theatre

"The Forbidden Kingdom" — Jackie Chan vs. Jet Li: This time, it's personal! Actually, these two martial arts masters have never faced each other before, which in theory is the primary allure here. But while the first (and only) time they fight each other is swollen with anticipation and indeed thrilling, the rest of the movie is a solid family-friendly action flick. – Southside Cinema (See Monday's Royal Gazette for review)

"Speed Racer" — The Wachowski brothers have tumbled into a matrix of their own this time, one which has rendered them completely out of touch with the outside world. In adapting the Japanese anime television series, writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski have created a noisy, overlong, mind-numbing extravaganza that is tailor-made for nobody but themselves. – Little Theatre
