Come along and learn how to build a sand masterpiece

Building sandcastles isn't just for children.On Saturday, people of all ages are invited to try their hand at building a sand masterpiece as part of the 16th Annual Bermuda Sandcastle Competition at Horseshoe Bay.Teams and individuals have from 10am to 4pm to create their sculptures.Winners in seven categories will be announced after 4.30pm.Entries are divided into the following categories: children 12 and under; teens; adults/open; senior citizens 55 years old and over; visitors; companies and organisations; families.The best overall sculpture will receive a $1,000 prize; $500 will be given to the second-place entry and $250 for third place.Organisers will hold a free workshop tomorrow and on Friday from 6.30pm until 7.30pm at Horseshoe Bay.“Come learn from the local pros about tools and tricks of the trade, watch hands-on demonstrations and ask questions to get the edge on Saturday's competition,” said Nicky Gurret.Instructors will be Hannah Strang and Erika Mattatall, both of whom have backgrounds in fine arts. They have competed numerous times in past years and are excited to share their experience.They will teach about the importance of water and packing the sand just right, how to create different shapes and textures to really make your work stand out from the rest.“Everyone should enter,” said Ms Gurret. “Bring your bucket and spade and get digging. This is a fun day for the whole family and perfect entertainment for houseguests and visitors alike. Build something spectacular, be original and have fun.”Free juice and water will be supplied to all participants. The main sponsor of this year's event is the Bermuda Department of Tourism.
