Sam Mello, before and after a previous St Baldrick's shave.

This year close to 40 people are expected to be taking part in the shave, including a few families and younger children.Event spokeswoman Kate Daly said: “There’s a woman taking part who works with the Government, she and her daughter are shaving this year. There’s a family with a woman who has shaved before, her husband, son and herself are shaving again and her daughter is going to have her hair cut and will donate it to charity.“There’s a little boy around age seven who saw a picture of a boy with cancer from overseas and wanted to do the shave in his honour. He and his mom went to the website and looked at the children who were undergoing cancer treatment and his mom contacted us to put the boy’s name up on the website.”To donate to Sam’s St Baldrick’s fund, visit www.stbaldricks.org/donate and type in: ‘Sam M Bermuda’. There is a full list of participants taking part available through www.stbaldricks.org.

Pop into Flatts Village restaurant Rustico towards the end of next month and you might stumble upon a curious sight — a room full of bald staff.

Ten members of the kitchen and service staff, including maitre’d Greg Stienlet, will shave thier heads to raise cash for cancer research fundraiser St Baldrick’s next month.

Some of their regular customers had participated and encouraged them to take part this year.

Mr Stienlet said: “It was an immediate yes from us because it’s a great charity. It’s a chance for us to do something for Bermuda and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

They hope to raise a “conservative amount” of $100 per person so they can donate $1,000 to St Baldrick’s.

So far many of their customers have shown support and been generous in their giving and they have also reached out to people through the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Mr Stienlet said the shave might even help to attract new customers to the Italian eatery.

He said: “I know of a gentleman at Bolero who shaved his head once and he used to be maitre’d down there and he got a fantastic response after that, so I think we will probably raise even more money once we shave out heads because people will ask more questions about it.”

Felix Gonsalves, Melvin Fernandes, Carmo D’Mello, Antonio Falcao, Cazmiro Palah, Alessandro Odoli, Leslie Fernandes, Florence ‘Bosco’ Broges and Shankar Kokkula will also take part.
