Get Ink-spired: Searching for the Island’s best tattoo

Event organiser Janson Cross is always looking for new ways to keep the party-going crowd excited. That’s why after seeing the popularity of the VH1 show about Harlem-based tattoo artists, ‘Black Ink Crew’, he tried his luck at inviting the celebrities to the Island. To his delight Caesar, the tattoo parlour’s owner, agreed to host Get Inked, an after-party at Carriage House in St George’s on April 27.He said: “I was glad that it was able to come together and he was able to come down at that time because the show has just wrapped up on television and I know it was still fresh in people’s minds.“It was probably also the best time for them to make it because the following Monday they start shooting for season two of ‘Black Ink’.”Mr Cross said he’d noticed that tattoos had grown in popularity here and so he decided to get the newly reopened Smokin’ Joe’s Tattoo Parlour on board with the event. In lead up to the party, event group www.BermudaNightOut.com and Smokin’ Joe’s have launched an exciting competition in search of some of the Island’s best tattoos.Organisers are encouraging people to send photos of their tattoos to getinkedbda@gmail.com. A name and number must be included and the picture must clearly show that it is the person’s tattoo. The deadline for photo submissions is today; the photo that gets the most ‘likes’ on the Bermuda Night Out website, between Monday and April 25 at 8pm, will win.First prize is a $500 gift certificate for a tattoo at Smokin’ Joe’s; second and third place winners will get gift certificates of $250 and $150 respectively.Mr Cross said the after-party was sure to be a crowd pleaser, with music by local DJs King Jyrus, National Movements Radio and D'General.“I think it’s going to be an extremely exciting event,” he said. “They get a chance to see Caesar from Black Ink, which is a popular show on TV, and it’s going to be a great all around event where people can go and have fun and there will be three great DJs playing.”If the event is a success the organisers may try and bring Black Ink Crew back to the Island to offer custom tattoos in the future, Mr Cross said.Tickets to the Get Inked after-party are $20 or $30 for VIP and can be purchased at Kit 'n' Caboodle, Secrets in the Washington Mall or online at www.bdatix.com.Useful website: www.BermudaNightOut.com
