Chewstick to hold fundraiser
Chewstick has been known for putting the ‘fun’ in fundraiser — and this weekend’s charitable rally and open house will be no exception.
The artistic collective is inviting the community into its space on the corner of Elliot and Court Street for an afternoon of exciting tours, music and activities — like mural painting and sidewalk chalk art.
They are also expecting to entertain guests with performances by teen poet and spoken word artists, who take part in the ChewSLAM programme.
The ‘Fundraising Rally and Open House’ will take place on Saturday from 11am until 5pm.
A similar event last December proved to be extremely successful and attracted a wide array of people, including some who were experiencing the area for the first time.
Students Bryn Thomas, Chante Pitcher and Lesley Campbell, from Bermuda High School, will also be leading the mural painting at this weekend’s event.
They have spent the past month planning the design of the wall and have organised the community day as part of a class project.
Their goal has been to enhance work done by The Chewstick Foundation, by breaking down barriers for social change and community healing.
Miss Thomas, the group leader, said: “I have been involved with Chewstick programmes and see how focused they are in bringing everyone together, so it made sense that our project should help them to do that.
“We’re really excited for everyone to come out, get involved, and get to know Chewstick.”
The Chewstick Foundation hosts a variety of programmes to support youth, art, culture and community on the Island.
Ms Bean encouraged members of the public to come out with their friends and family and share in the fun of the day’s activities, particularly the mural.
Any monies raised from the event will help Chewstick to continue its programmes and get further in its aim of “enriching our Island home and the world”.
That same afternoon, members of Chewstick’s Teen Poetry & Spoken Word group ChewSLAM will be performing at the “Poetry in the Park” event at Par La Ville Park, from 4pm until 6pm.
