Chewstick’s mammoth murals ‘help to beautify’ island

Chewstick has done it again! After transforming some buildings in the Hamilton area into beautiful works of art, it has decided to branch out and create murals in different parts of the island.

The artistic collective was recently commissioned to create a mural at the ‘Urban Cottage' at Wellbottom Industrial Community in Warwick.

Property owner, Nicole Golden Hendrickson, invited the Chewstick Community Art Programme to facilitate a 250 square foot graffiti mural on the building's exterior.

Ms Hendrickson praised the final product and said: “It's already been a great investment.

“So many people have stopped to take a look at it, and it has really helped to beautify the area. The mural design also compliments my business model, and supports local artists affiliated with the Chewstick Foundation.

“I'm hoping the mural will help bring more attention to Wellbottom and encourage locals to visit the businesses operating here.”

Chewstick's mission is to empower people through storytelling, creative expression and social justice — and it's community art programme aims to do just that by beautifying public spaces.

The art programme director Tiago Garcia said: “We want to help build relationships between visual artists and building owners.

“Investing in public art and building exterior beautification projects is a great way to support local visual artists, and also helps to create new shared experiences for both locals and guests.

“The Chewstick Foundation has done a great job enhancing its surrounding area in the City of Hamilton; however we now want to explore island-wide public art projects.

“It helps to have talented artists like [graffiti artist] Juan available to paint, so we want to find him (and others) more spaces to create on.”

Anyone interested in commissioning a public mural, or who want to support other initiatives coordinated by the Chewstick Community Art Programme, can reach Mr Garcia by phone: 292-2439, or e-mail: tiago@chewstick.org.
