Weaving a rich tapestry of artistic journeys

Ready to entertain: Somersfield Steel Orchestra will be among the performers at Somersfield Academy’s ‘Tapestry’ event on June 14

Combining the visual arts with the performing arts is not always easy, but Somersfield Academy will attempt to do just that this weekend with a special performance.

The event, called Tapestry, will incorporate dance, gymnastics, visual arts, and music.

“I was looking for a term that would combine, music, art, dance, jump rope and gymnastics,” said organiser and Somersfield music teacher Janice Pearman. “I thought of a patchwork quilt. We have a piece of each aspect of the arts put together in one show, so you get to see the different talents of the children at Somersfield.”

Tapestry is billed as a weaving together of the different artistic journeys and shared experiences of the students.

Performances by the Somersfield Steel Orchestra, Somersfield acrobats, and singers will take place in the gym at the school, while there will be an art show of the students’ paintings and drawings in another room. In addition, Somersfield has several musical guests taking part including the Warwick Academy Jazz Band and the Bermuda School of Music Steel Orchestra.

Mrs Pearman teaches the steel pans at Somersfield and in several other locations. The school is particularly proud of its steel orchestra.

“It is rapidly becoming a part of the school culture,” said Mrs Pearman.

Somersfield hosted the Pan Jazz Festival last year, and this event is the follow up.

“We want to feature our young people and show how they are working towards developments in the arts,” said Mrs Pearman.

The event is on June 14 at Somersfield. There will be a cocktail reception beginning at 5.30pm, followed by the show at 6.30pm. Tickets are $50 for patrons, $25 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets at the door will be slightly more expensive. They are available from www.bdatix or from the school.
