Helping young signers pick up the Tempo

Ah! Tempo alumnus Rajai Denbrook will serve as the programme director and drama/theatre instructor for the scheme which started back up recently after a 14-year hiatus. He is pictured here in his costume in the recent Troika Bermuda production of Beauty and the Beast.

Does your child belt out songs in the shower? Does he frequently turn the living room into a dance floor?

Ah! Tempo might be just the answer.

Never heard of it? It’s a local performing arts programme for kids between the ages of nine and 14.

Popular singers Tricray Astwood and Twanee Butterfield are among its alumni.

“If your child is the one always singing, the first one to get up when the music comes on; if they’re bopping their head in the car or have music blasting in their room, then they would be great for Ah! Tempo,” said founder Luann Wainwright Dill. “They don’t need to be professional in any shape or form, but just come with their love for the arts.”

Ah! Tempo began in 1995 and ran as a summer programme for five years.

It stopped only because Ms Wainwright Dill, a music teacher, changed jobs. This time she has teamed up with other professionals to offer the programme to singers, dancers and actors — through after-school classes and full-day workshops during midterm breaks. The idea is to showcase their talents in two productions each year.

Programme director Rajai Denbrook said he learned a lot by taking part in Ah! Tempo as an eight-year-old. He’s since starred in numerous plays on Island and was recently the tightly-wound clock, Cogsworth, in Troika Bermuda’s Beauty and the Beast.

“For me as a person who was very much inclined to the arts, it was a rigorous programme that allowed me to discover how hard I can work and how creatively and enthusiastically I can use my talents,” he said.

“Those were life skills that I was later able to transfer to other parts of my life. I think that’s why so many of us are still thriving after the experience.”

Ah! Tempo is now holding auditions (today and tomorrow) for its October midterm intensive. For more information e-mail ahtempobda@gmail.com or phone 505-1159.
