Chewstick fundraiser on November 20

Music + wine will hopefully = $$$ for Chewstick.

Local band 3 Kings will take centre stage at a fundraiser for Chewstick organised by Discovery Wines.

The eponymously named Charles Smith Wines will lubricate festivities.

Their American owner started the company after he retired from his career as manager of Danish musical duo the Raveonettes.

“We thought a rock and roll charity like Chewstick needed a rock and roll wine label like Charles Smith to help it,” said Discovery’s Jessica Binns.

“We chose Chewstick, because they have a strong presence in the community and do an excellent job promoting and featuring local Bermudian talent.”

Mr Smith managed the Raveonettes for nine years and became a fan of good food and wine along the way. He eventually returned to the United States and started up his own vineyard in Washington State.

In 2009 he was named Food & Wine magazine’s winemaker of the year.

Tickets for the November 20 event are $30 per person. Ten percent of wine sales will go to Chewstick.

“We managed to keep the ticket price so low by delving into our marketing and promotions budget,” said Miss Binns.

“This is money we normally use to entertain employees from different wine companies who visit us. This is the first time we have done something like this.”

The event runs at Discovery’s warehouse at 5 Bakery Lane in Pembroke from 6pm until 8pm.

To reserve a space e-mail events@discoverywines.bm or call 296-9463.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Just who are the 3 Kings Band?

The 3 Kings is a local band comprised of Aswad Wilson, Mitchell ‘Live Wire’ Trott and Jules Roberts.

The 3 Kings have been playing together for about three years.

They frequently perform at Chewstick’s Elliott Street headquarters and at other venues around the Island.

And the Raveonettes ...

The Danish indie rock duo features Sune Rose Wagner on guitar and Sharin Foo on bass and guitar.

Both perform vocals.

Their music is characterised by close, two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers.

They mix that with hard-edged electric guitar, overlaid with liberal doses of noise.

Their music often has a driving beat and dark lyrical content with themes of murder, suicide and betrayal.

Albums include Lust, In and Out of Control and Raven in the Grave.
