With high winds in spring, the fashion flock steers clear of the streets. Lifestyle looked indoors — to the women shaping our style — for inspiration.

Janika Roberts, 33, salon manager

Salon Pink’s dress code dictates her muted palette of “black, white and grey”, but Ms Roberts always stands out with unexpected silhouettes and soft tailoring.

She says she never pre-plans outfits. “You have to take the weather into consideration of course,” she said.

“You should have come yesterday. I was wearing a silver, metallic pencil skirt with a grey top and nude shoes. It was all grey. I had my big, grey smokers jacket on. Sometimes I’ll do one solid palette, other times I mix it up.”

Her all-black look is elevated with the details.

The nails, black-transparent, geometric acrylics, are courtesy of Ocean Beauty Bar on Parliament Street.

She is sentimental about her jewellery. “My signet ring was a gift from my grandmother who passed away last year. This ring I’ve never taken off. I got it in my early 20s. This gold bracelet was my granny’s also. I’m not a big accessory buff. I keep my pieces very minimal.”

Her style icon is Kate Moss. “She’s everybody’s, right?” she adds, laughing.

When off-duty she brings in denim and “maybe army green”.

“My pallette’s still muted and monochromatic,” she said.

Carlacia Condor, 28, sales associate

Lifestyle spotted Ms Condor sporting the coiffure of the season — braids. The AS Cooper Express employee says she wasn’t surprised to be noticed.

“Everybody loves the hair,” she said of the Havana twist she’s been wearing since January.

The crochet braids are redone once a month by mobile stylist Kellie Woods.

Ms Condor said she favours bright colours.

Her pink, floral top is an obvious choice for spring and her lilac lip colour is an Instagram find. Local business Lip Language supplies handmade lip cream that promises to suit women of all skin tones. Neither a gloss nor a lipstick, the highly pigmented creams are cruelty-free, hydrating and made with essential oils, shea butter, aloe and vitamin E.

She says she keeps an eye on the trends. Her picks for this season are crop tops, midi dresses and clogs. Her heeled boots carry the same nod to chunky, 90s influenced footwear.

“I’m trying to get into the sneaker trend,” she said,” but it’s tough — I love heels.”

She says another favourite look is matching sets, pointing out a neon pseudo-Hawaiian printed crop top and flared, skater skirt set.

Shelbi Virgil, 25, sales associate

Ms Virgil works at Perry Footwear and does hair on the side. She models her own handiwork, a modern “Heidi braid” with striking spectacles.

“I like to switch it up,” she said. “The glasses are from Mystiques Unique [an accessories boutique in Bermudiana Arcade]. They have a lot of amazing stuff. If you’re looking for different sunglasses and frames you can find them there.

“Today, I wanted to be comfortable. I threw on the turquoise top and some grey tights for a pop of colour with my boots.”

The staff can wear what they like to work. The only dress code — shoes from the shelves.

“We try to keep it classy to fit in with the look of the store. You don’t want to dress down too much, but we are able to express ourselves through how we dress.

“The shoes are a part of our uniform and they help to show our clients how to wear different styles. They might wear it one way and if we wear the shoes they’re looking at, they’ll get a different look.”

Her boots, Stuart Weizman’s perennial ‘50/50’, are “very versatile”.

“I wear them with tights, pants and dresses. With a long shirt. You can do a whole lot with them. Scrunch them down, if you wish.”

Her style icons are British models, Agyness Deyn and the inimitable Kate Moss.

“I’m not a trendy person. I see pieces that I like and put them together. I like colours, but I would rather do black and white and throw a pop of colour in. My prediction for this spring would be yellow. It looks like a colour that will be booming this summer. White as well.”

As for shoes on her wishlist, she pulls out a sparkly pair of Kate Spade taxi-embellished pumps.

“They’re pretty bedazzled, but they’re beautiful. And you can do a simple black dress or a pencil skirt. This will set your whole outfit off.”
