About $1.3m spent on buying GP cars since 1998

Government has spent about $1.3 million on the purchase of 58 GP cars since 1998, it was reported in the House of Assembly on Friday.

Works Minister responded in writing to parliamentary questions submitted by who asked for an itemised list of the cost of each vehicle purchased by Government since November 12 1998.

Government bought the largest number of cars this year with 15 purchases at a total cost of $303,850. Of that amount, ten Suzuki Altos were purchased at the cost of $16,025 each, three Toyota Corollas and one Rover 400 came in at $31,025 each and $26,000 respectively, and another $24,525 was spent on a Suzuki.

In 1998, just two cars (Suzuki Altos) were purchased at $10,854 each. And the year 1999 cost the taxpayer $129,291 for six new GP cars.

And in each of the years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, Government spent $287,258 (11 cars), $227,844 (nine cars), $206,120 (nine cars), and $127,662 (six cars) respectively.

The Opposition United Bermuda Party has criticised the Government for what it says is lavish spending on GP cars since the ruling party took over the reigns of power.

During the House motion to adjourn at Friday?s sitting, Mr. DeVent criticised for incorrectly reporting a press statement on the purchase of GP cars, and called on his colleagues to help ensure that the media did a better job.

He said he had issued a statement saying that 58 GP cars had been purchased since 1998, a handful of which were for transporting dignitaries, but the paper reported that all the cars had been purchased for that purpose.
