There is a way to feel fabulous after 40 and Keema Perry says she can guide women to it. She’s trained, of course, but also draws on her own life experience.

A few years ago she was feeling burnt out when she was challenged with a question: who are you?

“I actually was at a chakra balancing workshop with Dr Karen Simons,” said Ms Perry, then the deputy headmaster at St George’s Preparatory School. “I said I was a teacher and she mentioned who we are is not what we do, they’re two different things.

“I felt like I didn’t know me. So there was this big quest to differentiate between who I was and what I do; what my gifts are outside of the classroom.”

To give herself the time to find out, she resigned her responsibilities as deputy headmaster and set to work, eventually becoming certified as an integrative health coach and an infinite possibilities trainer. In 2016, she created Powerhouse Academy, an online “school of thought”.

“It is a virtual school for women to help them get all the lessons we don’t get in a traditional school setting: to be balanced, to be calm, to be intuitive, to practice self-love and self-care,” she said.

“I became my messenger of hope; hope that I could do better, be better and get more out of life. I discovered that I could tap into my powerhouse to create the person that I choose to become and live the life that I desire to live. As I began to change my life, I wanted to give others hope that they could change their lives too.”

From out of that came Feel Fab After 40, six “live, virtual group sessions” that promise “a healthier and happier life”. Ms Perry hosted the first last Wednesday; yoga teacher Mel Dupres, author Gayneté Edwards-Jones and Shannon Cann, owner of a herbal retail business, will each lead a module.

“It’s for women who feel overworked, overstressed and overwhelmed and who want to, more or less, reclaim their power over themselves,” said Ms Perry, 45. “It’s for women who need to make themselves their priority — that was me. I put everything into my work. I was so passionate about teaching, but was just starting to feel burnt out. I felt I had to reset, create ways to reboot.

“I think it happened at 40 where I started this quest to get more out of life and I was sure there were other women who wanted more balance, wanted more calmness [instead of], when doing something for themselves, feeling guilty about it. It happens all the time, women are sick, but they have to go in to work. From a teacher’s perspective, because it’s just easier to go in, or there are no substitutes, school just always comes first.”

People can cherry-pick or sign up for all of the remaining five sessions. Ms Perry will ask specific questions to find out where women want to be and help them establish a method to get there.

“When you take care of yourself, you actually have more to give to other people,” she said. “I believe everybody intuitively knows what they need, they just need encouragement and accountability to get it done; they follow up with the action steps because they know they will meet with me the next week.”

The programme is designed to help women become more confident, selfish, balanced and free, to teach them how to be a “money manifestor” and be well.

“Really I’m a health coach, but I’m not just looking at nutrition. I’m looking at mind, body and spirit as well,” Ms Perry said. “It was all part of finding my way. I knew I wanted more out of life. I wanted to start writing my own story.

“There’s something that happens when you’re over 40. I think that’s a time when you look and say, ‘I’m here. Now what? There are so many things I thought I would have accomplished by now but I will not let that hold me back. I’m determined’.”
