Jeff Sousa could run for the UBP against Alex Scott

Jeff Sousa

The United Bermuda Party will unveil its candidate for Warwick South East at a press conference this morning.

It is thought that Jeff Sousa, president of Sousa's Landscape Management Company, will be the Opposition's choice to take on former Premier Alex Scott in a seat which is seventh on its list of targets.

The UBP must hold its current 13 seats and win six more if it is to form the next Government.

Last time Mr. Scott was 96 votes ahead of Opposition challenger Bob Richards. Mr. Scott has continuously represented the Warwick area since the 1993 election.

Meanwhile The Royal Gazette understands lawyer and UBP veteran candidate Ed Bailey has emerged as the frontrunner to take on the PLP in Sandys North — won convincingly by the PLP's Michael Scott in a 2004 by-election.

And the PLP are staying tight-lipped about the fate of Randy Horton, who lost the backing of his Southampton West branch to fight that seat at the coming election in favour of Government consultant Marc Bean.

It is also understood Walter Lister has won the support of his local party to fight Sandys South Central.

However all PLP selections must be also go through both the candidates committee and the central committee to be ratified and the party hierarchy has already indicated it will dump candidates who don't have the support of the public in opinion polls.
