Final Onion Series meet
THE final meet in the Onion Series staged by the Flyers Track Club will be held on Saturday at the National Sports Centre starting at 10.00 a.m. And Flyers head coach Donna Watson said: “We hope to have between 150 and 200 kids come out for it.”
Age brackets from nine years old and up will be featured as well as Masters categories.
Watson said: “We have sent out invitations to all the schools and we hope to see some of those athletes who competed at the Inter School Sports take part. Obviously there will be the athletes from all the clubs on the island — West End, Mid-Island Striders, Pacers and obviously the Flyers. But there are a number of very good young athletes out there who are not with clubs — they beat many of the club athletes at the Inter School Sports.”
There will be a 400 metre race for kids under nine and also a fun race.
“At 11.30 we will hold a 50 metres Mascots Race with mascots from the Fire Station, Drug Control and other groups — that should be a lot of fun.”
Watson said this will be the sixth and final meet in the Onion Series — the first was held at the beginning of the year.
“It will be a full meet — 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000 and 5000 metre races as well as the relay. And there will be the field events like the shot put, long jump, high jump and cricket ball throw.”
A draw for prizes will be held and the trophies for the Onion Series will also be awarded on the day.
The Onion Series is sponsored by the XL Foundation.
