Senior citizens across the Island are being honoured apart of the annual Senior's Week — taking place from now until June 3 and is entitled, 'Elders Moving Upward Talented and Excellent.'

More than 500 people — mostly elderly — packed the City Hall Theatre yesterday for the opening ceremony, with a proclamation read by Premier Ewart Brown.

Six, free, daily events hosting activities are scheduled — including the launch of a fashion show and crafts exhibition — put on by elderly people — for the first time in the programme.

Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Wayne Perinchief, Sen. Phillip Perinchief, Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley and Corporation of Hamilton Mayor Sutherland Madeiros were also in attendance.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is the main organiser. Both Dr. Brown and Mr. Dunkley, highlighted the hard work made by seniors' in Bermuda, which has ultimately benefited the country.

Several seniors that were nominated by various activity clubs throughout the Island, received award certificates, presented by Dr. Brown and officials.

Heather Whalen, of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, which is organising the initiative, said: "Every year, we honour members who receive tributes from their respective clubs.

"We also honour those who are or going to be over the age of 100. Unfortunately, two of those honoured yesterday have recently passed away — Mr. Neville Tatem and Mrs. Olga Scott.

"The whole purpose is to put the spot-light on senior citizens, to honour, salute and pay tribute to them."

Today's programme includes a talent show at the City Hall Theatre, from 1.30 to 2.45 p.m. A concert in Victoria park will take place tomorrow, with the crafts and fashion show on Thursday and the annual Shelly Bay picnic on Friday.

A church service honouring seniors' will happen on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, you can contact Heather Whalen or Jeannie Isaac, at the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs on 292-1681.
