Jail for US drug smuggler

An American tourist who tried to bring nearly $100,000 of cannabis resin into Bermuda has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.Renard Corley, 54, of Chicago, admitted smuggling 954.3 grams of the drug on a flight to Bermuda on Monday.In Magistrates' Court this morning, Corley pleaded guilty to importation but denied possession with intent to supply.He told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo he was an unemployed father who had been desperate for money.Crown counsel Tawana Tannock told the court that Corley was caught at Customs in Bermuda, after an inspector checked his luggage and grew suspicious of the five coats on hangars inside. The hangars were found to contain concealed drugs.Mr Tokunbo told Corley: “You took a chance. With a chance, you can either win or lose, and you have lost.”He then sentenced Corley to two-and-a-half years imprisonment.
