A man who pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding in Magistrates' Court on Friday changed his mind after claiming that he disagreed with the facts of the case put forward by the prosecution.

Shannon Sommersall, 36, of Derwent Lane, Devonshire, at first admitted unlawfully wounding Tyrone Edwards on May 22 last year in St. George's.

However, after the prosecutor read the details to the court, he said that was not the way he saw it.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Sommersall and his girlfriend had been at a club in St. George's when Mr. Edwards had approached his girlfriend.

According to the prosecutor, Sommersall felt that Mr. Edwards had disrespected his girlfriend and a fight broke out outside the club. Sommersall then held a knife against Mr. Edwards' face, and when he moved his face he was slashed. The court heard that Mr. Edwards received several other cuts during the incident.

After the facts of the case were read, Sommersall said: "Excuse me, Mr. Francis, I totally disagree with those facts, sir."

Mr. Francis said: "Then I will put you down for not guilty."

Sommersall was bailed for $500 and a trial date was set down for March 31.
