Charges were dropped against three men accused of a violent attack on Police officers after a fourth man claimed responsibility for the incident.

Che Tumang Pennyman, 30, Gavin McDonald O'Connor, 34, Lindley Paul Scott, 39, and Jevon Ashley Bean, 30, were all charged with damaging a Police car, threatening behaviour and endangering Police by throwing stones.

It was claimed however, that Pennyman, of Hamilton Parish, was the main culprit while the others were attempting to calm him down.

The court heard on Monday that Police on duty on Front Street at 2.15 a.m. on the morning of September 10 saw five men get into a car at the junction of Parliament Street with what appeared to be an open bottle of beer.

The men sped off down Court Street and Police gave chase. The car led them on a brief chase before coming to a stop on Ridge Pass.

There, according to the Police report, the men got out of the car and approached the Police car "becoming hostile", kicking the car and throwing stones.

Police called for assistance, and the men were eventually apprehended. The damage to the Police car was valued at $1,500.

Pennyman pleaded guilty to all three charges, while Scott and Bean, both of Devonshire and O'Connor, of Hamilton Parish, all pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour.

The Crown offered no evidence on the other charges against them.

"I humbly apologise for my behaviour," Pennyman told Magistrate Will Francis. "I had been drinking, though I know that's no excuse. I am willing to pay for all damages."

Lawyer Justin Williams was representing Scott and O'Connor, but said of Pennyman: "I would like to point out Pennyman has, to his credit, taken the fall... They are all extremely apologetic."

Magistrate Francis accepted Pennyman's version of events.

"I have given you the benefit of doubt that this was the result of liquor, and accepted Pennyman was the instigator," said Mr. Francis. "I have given credit to this admission, to your guilty pleas, and willingness to accept responsibility."

Scott, O'Connor and Bean were all fined $500. Pennyman was fined a total of $2,750 ? $1,500 of which will go to Police in payment for the damages to the car.
