Baby died from viral infection

A paediatrician who raised concerns over the death of a baby girl has now said that preliminary reports of the autopsy show she died from a rare complication of a viral infection.

Dr. Olutoyin Fayemi had spoken out in yesterday?s after it emerged that the five-month-old who died at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Tuesday had previously been treated there for a broken skull after falling out of a truck in October.

Dr. Fayemi, who had treated the child for this head injury, said in his view the investigation of the death ought to be taken further.

However, speaking yesterday he said: ? In no way did I mean to implicate or blame the parents, social services, family services, the Police, or KEMH.

?The initial report that this infant died from ?natural causes? was premature. My statements were made to inform the public that this is not normal and that further investigations were warranted.?

The baby had been admitted to KEMH around 1 a.m on Tuesday suffering from respiratory distress, treated and discharged. She was readmitted in a worsened condition later in the morning and died.

A specialist team of forensic paediatric pathologists from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto conducted an autopsy on the baby on Wednesday.
