A man was fined $900 after driving while almost twice over the legal alcohol limit.

Christopher Dacosta Delima, 24, of Mount View Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday (Thurs).

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court Police on mobile patrol had seen Delima driving with his rear car lights off. Police followed Delima as he swerved along East Broadway, and he was finally stopped when he reached the longtail statues on Front Street.

Once stopped, the officers said they could smell alcohol on Delima's breath. He told officers that he had been drinking wine.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and taken to Hamilton Police Station for a breath test.

It revealed he had 155 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, almost twice the legal limit.

Magistrate William Francis disqualified him from driving all vehicles for a year.
