Two would-be-thieves had to flee empty handed after they failed to remove a cash register from Pasta Basta on Elliot Street on Thursday night.

At about 10 p.m. a man brandishing a machete entered the establishment and threatened an employee.

The employee fled to the rear of the kitchen, alerted other employees and called the Police.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said another employee went to the front of the shop and saw another man had joined the first and they were attempting to remove the cash register from the counter.

Mr. Caines said the two suspects fled before Police arrived and no one was injured and nothing was stolen.

He said Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit at 295-0011.

Towards the end of this week everyone should know what events Government has planned in celebration of Bermuda?s quincentennial. This year marks the 500th anniversary of Juan de Bermudez?s discovery of the Island and Government has set up a committee to arrange events and publicise the news.

On Thursday the Bermuda Philatelic Bureau released a series of five stamps to mark the anniversary.

A member of the committee said that International Race weekend was considered the first event of the quincentennial celebrations and that something has been planned for every month this year culminating in a major concert toward the end of the year.

A calendar detailing the events is expected to be released ?towards the end of next week,? the committee member said.
