The message for Rotarians yesterday was ?Better Living Through Learning? during a speech given by the president of The Seniors Learning Centre(SLC).

Marlene B. Landy spoke to Rotarians about how the centre caters to seniors by providing entertaining courses and activities.

?The main objective of SLC is to provide a non-threatening but dynamic learning environment where debate, discussion, controversy, humour, disagreement, insight and wisdom thrive.?

The SLC is a self governing body, with about 700 members, who elect their own officers and learning topics.

?It was founded in 1990 and is a non profit organisation of seniors (55 years and older) dedicated to meeting the needs and interests of its member.?

Membership and course fees are required.

?Under the sponsorship of the Bermuda College, the Centre has its own headquarters, office, meeting room and classrooms at the Stonington Campus in Paget.?

The members gather for about an hour once a week, for four to six weeks. Courses start in February and October each year.

Mrs. Landy said even though the study groups undertake serious learning in their courses, all activities are intended to be fun-filled, stress free, and carry no formal credits.

Community leaders, and educators who are interested in sharing their knowledge lead the courses. Also, many of the SLC courses are taught by their own members.

Courses offered range from many different things including: Bridge, Art, Aerobics, Health, different languages, and Computers.

Also field trips to Nonsuch Island and the Maritime Museum have been part of the learning experience.

Outings include, the theatre and dinner as well as adventures abroad.

?Our outings have taken us to all sorts of great places here in Bermuda and on cruises abroad that have included Cuba.?

Mrs. Landy urged members of the Rotary to join the SLC and voice courses that they would be interested in taking.
