Careless mistake lands burglar nine month jail sentence

A tenant who burgled his landlady for drug money while she nipped out to celebrate the New Year was nabbed after he left his trade-mark baseball cap at the scene.

Michael Lima, 33, of Wellington Slip Road, broke in to his landlady's lower apartment on New Year's Eve and took a money box containing $230.

But she noticed something was wrong when she returned in the early hours of the following day and found his hat with a distinctive red cross.

Lima, who owns his own construction company, immediately confessed to the crime when picked up by Police and said he stole the money to get high.

Yesterday Lima was jailed for nine months and was ordered to undergo three years' probation and drug treatment upon his release.

His probation officer asked for him to be spared jail and put through drug court but Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner noted he had previously breached a probation order given in 2003 for a similar offence.
