Spoilt men who talk the sweet talk but walk out when they choose need to be held accountable says one single mother.

Now in her 40s, she got pregnant more than a decade ago by her boyfriend and is now bringing up her daughter alone with no help from her father.

The pair had briefly discussed marriage but not seriously.

She said: "It is not enticing to me. I see so many people breaking up and getting divorced, it doesn't work.

"I am warned everyday not to get married. All the affairs people are having."

For her there was no need for a paper bond.

"If you are going to be together, you are going to be together, there are lots of people who have been together for 20 years who have never been married. It isn't so important.

"Marriage means both people paying bills. If it fails I could get stuck with all the bills.

"If I wanted to get married I wanted it to be forever."

When she became pregnant they both wanted the child: "I was going 29, it was late."

When the pair split the father did his share and paid his half of the bills but now he has skipped the country and she and her daughter haven't heard from him for a long while.

"The court system has to do a lot more to make men responsible.

"We have a problem with our men. Women get all the blame. When the school calls who do they call? Not the father.

"We have no moral guidelines for the men.

"I think men in Bermuda are quite spoiled, they talk to a woman, jive talk them, they say they love us and women fall for it but all the time they have another agenda."

But for her babies out of wedlock isn't a problem. She said teen mothers had been the norm for years and Bermuda had a declining birth rate.

"Bermudians are not breeding."
