More than two dozen sculptures, sketches and montages have been entered in the design competition for the memorial for those lost at sea.

The closing date was Monday and Acting Transport Minister Senator Michael Scott said he was extremely pleased with the standard of entries.

A winner will be chosen this month for the monument which will be built at Great Head Park in St. David's, also known as St. David's Battery.

He said: "The detail, effort and time which must have gone into creating the individual submissions has been both heartening and impressive and I am sure that the committee will have a very hard time choosing the winning design."

The tragedy ? in which Micah Battersbee and Allen Edness died one year ago today ? was partly responsible for the monument idea.

Sen. Scott said: "Our aim remains to create a lasting memorial which conveys warmth and solace for family members who have lost their loved ones at sea."
